In a recent article published by Bloomberg BNA, Peter Stathopoulos discusses the wave of tax tribunals as states step forward with new independent forums, including Georgia’s tax tribunal, which was enacted in 2012. ‘‘I’ve found the Department of Revenue to be more amenable to settling cases than they have in prior years,’’ Stathopoulos told the publication. The article goes on to discuss how the “Georgia tribunal has further streamlined appeals with a standing order that automatically remands new cases to the Department of Revenue for 90 days, promoting resolution without the tribunal’s intervention. Stathopoulos explained that several matters don’t return to the tribunal, particularly small claims, which helps keep the tribunal’s docket clear.”
